As a parent, it can be tough to know the proper way to help your child when a tooth is ready to come out.  The roots of the baby teeth gradually dissolve as the permanent teeth descend.  This process is called resorption.  If a baby tooth is only slightly loose, you should leave it alone until more of the root dissolves.  If it is very loose but won't come out, you can help your child pull it out.  Use a tissue or a piece of gauze to grasp the tooth firmly and give a quick twist as you pull.  If you and your child aren't able to remove the loose tooth, it may need to be extracted.

Several studies have shown that electric toothbrushes are better at reducing plaque and gingivitis (gum disease).  Compared to hand-powered toothbrushing, electric brushes with rotational-oscillation action results in less plaque and fewer occurrences of gingivitis.  In addition power toothbrushes may motivate people to brush regularly by eliminating the "work" of hand held brushing.

No matter your tootbrush preference, good technique makes the difference in your oral health.  Following are some tips for good brushing techniques:

1. Brush a mimimum of twice a day for about two minutes each time.

2. Angle brush at about a 45 degree angle up onto the tooth and into gum line.

3. Use a soft-bristle brush, and brush gently in circles.

The 2 brands of power toothbrushes that our office recommends is Sonicare and Oral-B.  Both brands can be found in your local department or drug stores.   We would be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding power brushing vs. manual brushing.
