A crown is a restoration that covers a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size.  Its purpose is to strengthen or improve the appearance of a tooth.  There are several reasons a crown is needed.

  1. To support a large filling when there isn't enough tooth remaining
  2. To attach a bridge
  3. To protect weak teeth from fracturing
  4. To restore fractured teeth
  5. To cover badly shaped or discolored teeth
  6. To cover a dental implant

Both the look and function of crowns should be considered when choosing the materials most suitable for you.  Other considerations will be the tooth location, the position of the gum tissue, the amount of tooth that shows when you smile, the color or shade of the tooth and the function of the tooth.

The most common material used to make crowns is porcelain attached to a durable metal shell, because of its strength.  Usually two visits are necessary in the process if placing a crown.  On the first visit your tooth will be prepared for the crown and impressions will be taken.  Our dental lab will then make the crown from the model.  A temporary crown will be placed at this appointment and when the permanent crown is ready it will be placed.

To prevent damage or fracturing of crowns, avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects.
